Three men have been arraigned before a Tinubu Magistrate Court in Lagos by the Nigerian Police, Lagos State command for allegedly posing as officers of the Joint Task Force JTF. The men are Kachala Abubakar, Tijani Lawani and Algoni Mustapha.
The police told the court that the men had unsuccessfully tried to arrest one Ali Mustapha on behalf of the JTF but were shocked when Mustapha refused and asked for proper identification. This led to confusion among the trio which ultimately led to their arrest by the Police.
The incident happened at Tiamiyu Savage Street in Victoria Island area of Lagos State. The suspects were arraigned before the court on the counts of impersonation, disorderly conduct and breach of public peace.
The charges read in part: "That you, Tijani Liwani, Algoni Mustapha and Kachala Abubakar on November 5,2013 at No 17, Tiamiyu Savage Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District did impersonate as members of the Joint Task Force law enforcement agency, and attempt to arrest one Ali Mustapha.
"That you, Tijani Liwani, Algoni Mustapha and Kachala Abubakar, on November 5, 2013 at 7:15pm did conspire together with intent to cause breach of peace and thereby commit an offence."
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges and applied for bail in liberal terms through the defence counsel Vincent Usman.
The magistrate, Mrs. S. K. Matepo, granted bail to the defendants in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum before adjourning the matter to the 20th of November.
