The championship which is a 36-hole event will be played over two days, at 18-holes each with the grand finale and award presentation coming up tomorrow.
According to the organizers, this year's edition of the annual tournament that has produced notable professional golfers is expected to attract massive participation by golf teams from across the country.
A coaching clinic for children above the age of 14 and adults that are interested in the sport, will also take place today.
Speaking at a media briefing yesterday to herald this year's championships, Head, Events and Sponsorship, First Bank PLC, Mrs Bridget Oyefeso, said sponsoring the tournament for the past 52 years has been extremely rewarding even as she reiterated the commitment of First Bank to continue to sponsor the event as part of its social responsibility to the society.
"This is the 52nd edition of the First Bank Lagos Amateur Open Golf Championships and it's been fantastic.
The golfers are going; to us at First Bank, the customers are very important partners in business and we believe in engaging them as part of our social responsibility" she remarked.
She went on: "We care about our customers and we believe that the game of golf helps them to keep a healthy mind and body. So, 52 years of golfing has been extremely rewarding.
"We're impressed with the successes recorded by the players discovered in the past editions of the championships. We've been monitoring their progress as they're going places.
"Two of the kids that were discovered at that the golf coaching clinic last year, have already acquired international exposure in the United Kingdom where they were among the top 10 players.
Their trip was sponsored by First Bank and we're encouraged by their progress and we'll keep doing what we're doing because we know we're changing lives and also building human capacity in the society. That has been the driving force behind what we're doing at First Bank.
Oyefeso also spoke about the new innovations introduced in this year's edition.
"As part of new innovations in this year's edition of the First Bank Open Golf tournament, we're introducing the Simulator which has never been here at the Ikoyi Club. We're bringing it into this year's championships. On our website, we also have online golf tournament.
These are the things we created to encourage everybody to be part of the fun" she explained.
Samuel Amadi and J. Ajiboye hold the record of highest winners of the championships with five trophies each to their credit. Other notable professional golfers produced by the tournament include Sunday Okpe, Willy Gift, Oche Odoh and I. Ocheje among others.
