The popular Oja Titun in Ile-Ife, Osun State was, weekend, gutted by fire, destroying property worth millions of naira.
The inferno which threw the Odo-Ogbe area of the ancient city into grieve lasted about seven hours and it took the efforts of the state fire service to bring it under control.
Although the cause of the fire incident could not be ascertained at press time, eye witnesses said the fire started from a shop in the market.
A trader at the market, Mrs Adewumi Ronke, said the few traders who were at the market when the fire started called men of the state fire service.
Special Adviser to Osun State Governor on Commerce, Cooperatives and Empowerment, Dr Olalekan Yinusa, who was one of the early callers at the market sympathized with the affected traders, urging them to be careful with electric appliances, especially during harmattan season.
He instructed the Director of Empowerment in the ministry to take account of victims and the extent of damage.
He said Governor Rauf Aregbesola was concerned with their current plight and assured that the government would assist them.
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy in the state, Mr Sunday Akere, who was also at the market urged traders in the state to adhere to the weekly market cleaning exercise to avoid such ugly occurrence in future.
Some of the affected traders enjoined the state government to come to their aid, saying their source of livelihood has been affected by the incident.
